Our prime minister
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi insisted yesterday that he doesn’t want the country to be humiliated and go down the same road as its neighbours and other countries in the EU, so the government intends to continue working hard to build upon its achievements. Dr Gonzi was taking part in a political activity in which he answered questions put by members of the public on the mychoice.pn website. He again insisted that for as long as the PN manages to acquire the majority of votes to implement the electoral programme and approve new legislation in parliament, it is duty-bound to remain in office. This is a matter of duty, not right, he said. “There are a whole series of laws that will need to be discussed, the most important ones being the Cohabitation Bill, the Whistleblower Bill and that aimed at regulating the IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) sector, which is like a jungle at present. The law will not introduce IVF, as Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat has said, but it will introduce a structure that will regulate what can and cannot be done.” Reacting, the Labour Party said Dr Gonzi’s statement was an insult to women who would like to opt for IVF but cannot. By saying that the IVF method has been used in Malta for 20 years, the prime minister is demonstrating that he is detached from reality. “Many families would like to use the IVF method to have children but haven’t got the means to do so”, said the PL. “At the same time”, the party added, “the prime minister said the new IVF law would be aimed at avoiding cloning and to ensure that this practice is punishable. “To the PL, the first aim of the IVF law should be that of helping families who would like to have children but cannot, for one reason or another. This would be the first law that a new Labour government would introduce”.(independent.com.mt) It is obvious that a politician must continue program sounds even in times of crisis. However related speech of the Prime Minister is purely political.
