Worker dies tragically after crane wire rope fails
A 59-year-old construction worker from Siġġiewi died tragically yesterday when he was hit by a load which plummeted from a tower crane after the steel lifting rope failed and snapped. The accident occurred on Windsor Terrace Street, corner with Sir Arthur Mercieca Street, in Sliema. The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) said in a statement that the crane was being used to lift a bundle of wood shuttering. From preliminary investigations, an overload did not seem to cause the wire rope failure. The load fell several metres, landing just behind the victim, sadly hitting him and killing him. The man, who was hit in the back, died on the spot. Paramedics, members of the Civil Protection Department, and the police rushed to the site, shortly after receiving the emergency call at around 11.10am. A medical team from Mater Dei Hospital also called to give first aid, but the man was certified dead on site. In its statement, the OHSA reminded that the setting up and operation of all lifting appliances (including cranes) is covered by a number of specific provisions in the code of practice for the building and construction industry.(independent.com.mt) The question remains why the rope broke. Once the circumstances of the accident revealed a judgment may be rendered.
