Malta news: women’s progress
Minister hails women’s progress in employment
amily Minister Chris Said visited Lufthansa Technik Malta on the occasion of International Women’s Day yesterday, pointing out the achievements of women in jobs which were previously considered to be men’s domain. The company employs around 600 people, of which 64 are women who are involved in practically every task the aircraft maintenance company carries out. The number includes four managers and a team leader. CEO Stephan Drewes said that the company was proud of its female employees, adding that there was no difference between the men and women it employed. The proportion of female employees is higher than in Lufthansa Technik’s plant in Germany, he explained. Dr Said said that Lufthansa Technik provided a clear example of the progress women had registered, adding that it was clear that women now had the same opportunities as men. He noted that the company employed women in technical and manual jobs which were perceived to be solely men’s domain until recently, adding that this barrier had since shattered. These results, the minister said, were also due to continued investment in education. He remarked that gender equality was particularly evident in education, since 60% of university students were women.(independent.com.mt) Whether women or men new jobs are always good.

Bar manager may lose eye following fight
Two men were this evening remanded in custody after they pleaded not guilty to seriously injuring the manager of a Paceville club, who may lose his eye as a result of the incident. Luke Farrugia, 24, from Msida and David Gauci, 24, from Bugibba were charged with seriously injuring Fabian Camilleri. Mr Gauci was also charged with being an accomplice. Both were also charged with slightly injuring Osama Murad. Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard that a fight between Maltese and Arab men took place at Hugo's Bar on Wednesday night in which the bar bouncers and manager also got involved. Defence lawyer Gianluca Caruana Curran complained that while his clients were in the dock, the six bouncers who beat them up with a bar stool and threw them down a flight of stairs were not. Dr Caruana Curran said that he expected more from the police officers investigating the case because he had learnt that one of the club managers turned up at the police station with the CCTV footage but there was no guarantee that it had not been tampered with.(timesofmalta.com) The bar brawls, there's still do not see chance to end up in custody.

Burnt tar dumped at Majjistral Park
A large patch of burnt tar was recently dumped on the path and garigue close to Ix-Xagħra l-Ħamra at the Majjistral Park. In a statement, the park management condemned the vandalism which it said was observed during a guided walk with students attending the Foundation for Educational Services Youth.Inc Programme. The students were visiting the park as a preparation for their upcoming voluntary working day on site next week. The management said fresh dumping was also noticed in the barracks area where despite continuous cleanups picnickers persisted to leave their rubbish behind. The barracks area is currently being surveyed for eventual restoration after hundreds of volunteers helped to cleanup the site.(timesofmalta.com) This kind of thing is not uncommon in this kind of place.
