Giuliani endorses McCain, Schwarzenegger might - Vermont anti-Bush petition lambasted - Detroit mayor's legacy in question - Frigid winds whip through Northeast - Phoenix becomes sports boomtown.

Giuliani endorses McCain, Schwarzenegger might
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani ended his GOP presidential race and endorsed rival Sen. John McCain of Arizona on Wednesday.
Ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, with wife Judith, speaks of his campaign in the past tense in Orlando.
And sources say California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger might endorse McCain on Thursday.
"This is a man who is prepared to be president," Giuliani said of his "old friend."

Vermont anti-Bush petition lambasted
A town petition making President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney subject to arrest for crimes against the Constitution has triggered a barrage of criticism from people who say residents are "wackjobs" and "nuts."
In e-mail messages, voicemail messages and telephone calls, outraged people are calling the measure the equivalent of treason and vowing never to visit Vermont.

Detroit mayor's legacy in question
Amid calls for his resignation over racy text messages to a top aide, a chastened Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick headed to church Wednesday to set about salvaging his image with a televised address.
Officials in his administration have scoffed at the idea of Kilpatrick resigning during the speech, his first public comments since the scandal broke.

Frigid winds whip through Northeast
Lake Erie surged over its eastern shore Wednesday, adding flooding to the headaches delivered by a windy storm that tipped tractor-trailers, disrupted flights, and toppled trees and power lines across a wide swath of the nation.
A cold front and arctic air roared into New York before dawn, sending Tuesday's springlike temperatures plummeting. Buffalo went from 53 degrees at 3 a.m. Wednesday to 15 degrees by noon. Classes were canceled at most area schools.

Phoenix becomes sports boomtown
What was once the sleepy home of the NBA's Phoenix Suns, the Fiesta Bowl and baseball's spring training has blossomed into a national sports capital.
This year's Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and New York Giants is the latest in a growing list of national sports events that have landed in the desert. And more are on the way as Phoenix contends with Los Angeles to become the West's top destination for major events.
