Scent of a scandal at Crufts? - Jersey minister apologises for critical email - Extradition case duo celebrate - Budget seen doing little for the environment - Emerald Isle to go green: Irish PM.

Scent of a scandal at Crufts?
Bookies William Hill have closed betting on Crufts before the world's largest dog show even started. In a statement the bookmakers said it had taken the unprecedented step following a massive gamble on a Utility Dog being named Supreme Champion. William Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams said: "We cannot lay any of the other breeds and have such a one sided book that we have decided to close it.

Jersey minister apologises for critical email
A Jersey government minister has apologised for sending an email that poked fun at the police officer heading the investigation into child abuse on the island. As officers said the number of suspects has increased, Deputy Police Chief Lenny Harper threatened to take legal action after reading the email sent by health and social services minister Ben Shenton. In the email Mr Shenton refers to Mr Harper - who is leading the investigation into alleged child abuse at former children's home Haut de la Garenne - as comedian Lenny Henry.

Extradition case duo celebrate
Two former Guantanamo Bay detainees are celebrating after Spanish authorities dropped a bid to extradite them to face terrorism charges. British residents Jamil el-Banna and Omar Deghayes face no further legal challenges after claims they are linked to al Qaida were dropped. The pair returned to Britain in December after being released from the controversial United States camp in Cuba.

Emerald Isle to go green: Irish PM
The Irish government unveiled a series of multi-million euro (pound, dollar) policy initiatives Thursday as part of a plan to make the Emerald Isle a more environmentally sustainable economy. "We are uniquely placed to secure our economic future by marking ourselves out as a centre of the global green energy boom. This is the decision we have taken as government," Prime Minister Bertie Ahern said.

Budget seen doing little for the environment
Chancellor Alistair Darling is expected to hit gas guzzling vehicles and promote home insulation but do little else for the environment in a budget next week touted as green but with little real climate content. Already an easy target, four-wheel-drive vehicles and other high emission cars are likely to bear the brunt of Darling's green taxes with a further change in vehicle excise duty to reinforce the benefit of switching to cleaner cars.
