Adventurer Fiennes charged over car crash
The 66-year-old's Jaguar hit a car head on before crashing into another and mounting a pavement in Manchester. Fiennes -- who the night before the accident had completed a 42-mile endurance challenge, the High Peak Marathon, nearby -- was left dazed and with blood on his face, according to eyewitnesses at the time. The driver of the first car struck suffered serious injuries including collapsed lungs, broken ribs and a broken leg, while a five-year-old child in the vehicle suffered minor injuries. "I have concluded that there is sufficient evidence, and it is in the public interest, to charge Sir Ranulph Fiennes with driving without due care and attention," said lawyer Nicholas Beckett of the Crown Prosecution Service.(AFP)

Toyota starts production of hybrid car in UK
Japanese carmaker Toyota began producing Europe's first full hybrid vehicle on Monday at the company's car factory in Burnaston, in a boost to Britain's battered auto industry. The first European-made hybrid version of Toyota's Auris hatchback rolled off the production line under the watchful eye of the government's business minister Vince Cable. "Toyota's decision to make Burnaston the only plant in the world to build the Hybrid Auris is a strong endorsement of the UK as a manufacturing base for the next generation of cars," said Cable, after touring the Burnaston plant. "It is sending a signal to manufacturers that if you're not in the UK, then you're missing out on all the strengths and skills that the UK has to offer."(AFP)
