Government backs economy in face of turmoil
The economy is in a good position to weather the current turmoil on financial markets, the Prime Minister's spokesman said on Tuesday.
"Britain remains well placed to withstand this uncertainty in the global economy and of course we will have to remain vigilant," the spokesman told reporters after cabinet ministers had discussed volatile market conditions.

King signals lower rates
Bank of England Governor Mervyn King appeared on Tuesday to pave the way for a February interest rate cut to revive the economy but also warned price pressures might prevent any sharper monetary easing beyond that.
In a speech in Bristol, King also predicted Britain in 2008 would witness a "less buoyant housing market" and slower consumer spending in the most challenging year for policymakers since the Bank got control of interest rates in 1997.

Amy Winehouse Not In Rehab After Sun Crack Cocaine Video
Reports that Amy Winehouse has gone back into rehab have been denied by people close to the singer.
The Sun's website said she had entered a north London clinic.
The news followed the release of video footage apparently showing her smoking a crack pipe after snorting ecstasy and cocaine and admitting to downing six Valium.

UK electoral system 'open to fraud'
The UK's electoral system is "open to fraud" and should be changed to improve postal voting and voter registration security, Europe's human rights watchdog has declared.
The damning report by the Council of Europe says it is "childishly simple" to register bogus voters, and the system provides the anonymity to carry out fraud without detection.

Diana's butler asked about her marrying Muslim: priest
Princess Diana's butler asked a Catholic priest to find out if she could marry a Muslim in the months before her death in a 1997 Paris car crash, the cleric said Tuesday.
The testimony at the inquest into Diana's death appeared to confirm an account last week by butler Paul Burrell, who said the princess still yearned for a Pakistani surgeon she dated before Dodi Fayed, with whom she died.
