A British scientist who led researchers who created Dolly the Sheep is to abandon cloning using embryos for a rival method which makes stem cells without them, the Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.
Professor Ian Wilmut, of Edinburgh University, gained celebrity but also attracted criticism from some religious groups and pro-life campaigners after being involved in the cloning of the first mammal from an adult cell in 1996.
Portuguese police still without 'solution' in Maddie case
Portuguese police probing the May disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann "still do not have the solution" to the case, but are still receiving new information, the police chief said in an interview published Saturday.
"We have stronger assurances on certain aspects of the investigation, but it is also true ... that we still do not have the solution," Alipio Ribeiro, the national director of Portugal's judicial police, told the Expresso weekly.
Brown hit by poll rating slump
Gordon Brown has been dealt a heavy blow after a poll showed his personal ratings falling dramatically and Labour slipping further behind the Tories.
The YouGov survey for The Sunday Times found Labour trailing David Cameron's Conservatives by six points - double last month's margin.
While the Tories are unchanged on 41%, Labour have slumped to 35% (down three).
