Democrats unable to bring troops home
Nearly a year after anti-war voters put them in power, congressional Democrats remain unable to pass legislation ordering troops home from Iraq.
Frustrated by Republican roadblocks, Democrats now plan to sit on President Bush's $196 billion request for war spending until next year — pushing the Pentagon toward an accounting nightmare and deepening their conflict with the White House on the war.

Grand jury probes death of ex-cop's wife
A man who says he found the body of a former police officer's third wife in a bathtub said he was summoned by a grand jury convened to review her death.
Steve Carcerano, a friend of Kathleen Savio's ex-husband Drew Peterson, said he was called by the grand jury, but did not get to testify Wednesday and was told to return at a later date. Illinois State Police have said Peterson's brother, Paul, also was subpoenaed by a grand jury.

Democrats' debate turns to mud
The Democratic candidates for president had hardly stepped on stage for their debate here Thursday night when the political insults started dropping faster than Flying Elvises.
Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York accused former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards of a mud-slinging fest "right out of the Republican playbook."

McCain asks probe of anti-Romney calls

Republican John McCain is asking the New Hampshire attorney general to investigate phone calls to voters that pretend to be polls but raise questions about rival candidate Mitt Romney and his Mormon faith — and make favorable statements about McCain. McCain's campaign says it had nothing to do with the calls but fears voters will think it did.

Feds raid 'Liberty Dollar' HQ in Ind.
Evansville: Federal agents raided the headquarters of a group that produces illegal currency and puts it in circulation, seizing gold, silver and two tons of copper coins featuring Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.
Agents also took records, computers and froze the bank accounts at the "Liberty Dollar" headquarters during the Thursday raid, Bernard von NotHaus, founder of the National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve Act & Internal Revenue Code, said in an interview.
