Watchdog demands action on slow broadband
Thousands of Internet users are being short-changed by broadband connections that are far slower than advertised, a watchdog said on Wednesday.
The Consumer Panel, which advises communications regulator Ofcom, said there was widespread discontent among computer users that broadband can be frustratingly slow.

Brown fights back after poll slump
Prime Minister Gordon Brown, whose popularity has slumped to a new low after a series of government blunders, fought back on Wednesday with a spirited defence of his handling of a bank crisis and policy in Iraq.
Brown's six-month-old government has been pummelled by the first run on a British bank in more than a century, an uproar over the tax agency's loss of computer discs containing half the population's personal data and a storm over secret donations to the ruling Labour Party.

Guantanamo Bay Britons arrested
Three British residents held without charge or trial at the US Guantanamo Bay detention centre for several years have arrived back in the UK.
Two of them were arrested shortly before they landed at Luton Airport, police said.
Jamil el-Banna, Omar Deghayes and Abdennour Samuer arrived on board a charter jet from the camp in Cuba, the former detainees' lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, said.

Ricky in Archbishop religion debate
Comedian Ricky Gervais has engaged in a debate about theology with the Archbishop of Canterbury - confessing at the end that he might have "blown his image" by taking life seriously.
The Office star told Dr Rowan Williams he was concerned about "brainwashing" of children who are sent to faith schools at an early age, comparing teaching that God exists to belief in Father Christmas.

EU sparks row over car pollution
The EU has been accused of hypocrisy and weakness for compromising on a car pollution crackdown just days after claiming it was taking the lead on climate change.
At the Bali environment talks last week, the EU was credited with showing leadership on the need to protect the environment as the US dragged its heels.
But a storm of criticism has erupted after its new proposals on cutting CO2 emissions were shown to have been drastically weakened after intense lobbying by European car manufacturers.
