McCain gains Louisiana delegates
A majority of Louisiana's 47 Republican National Convention delegates tell The Associated Press they intend to back for Senator John McCain for president. Louisiana Republicans met Saturday to divvy up 44 of the state's delegates to the national convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul in September. Louisiana's Feb. 9 presidential primary would have pledged 20 at-large delegates had a candidate received at least 50 percent of the ballots cast. With Huckabee winning with 43 percent and McCain right behind with 42 percent, no at-large delegates were awarded.

Clinton aide changes Mich., Fla. stance
Harold Ickes, a top adviser to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign who voted to strip Michigan and Florida of their delegates last year, now is arguing against the very penalty he helped pass. In a conference call Saturday, the longtime Democratic Party member contended the DNC should reconsider its tough sanctions on the two states, which held early contests in violation of party rules. He said millions of voters in Michigan and Florida would be otherwise disenfranchised — before acknowledging moments later that he had favored the sanctions.

8 die as car hits Md. street-race crowd
A car plowed into a crowd that had gathered to watch a drag race on a suburban road early Saturday, killing eight people and injuring at least five, police said. Police said the white sedan was not involved in the street race but accidentally drove into the crowd of about 50 people that had spilled onto the highway to watch two racing cars speed off. "There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible," said Crystal Gaines, 27, whose father was among the dead.

NYPD questions man in therapist slaying
A law enforcement official says police investigators are questioning a Queens man in the vicious slaying of a psychologist in her office. The 39-year-old man was taken into custody early Saturday, after investigators linked him to forensic evidence at the bloody crime scene. That's according to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Therapist Kathryn Faughey was slashed 15 times with a meat cleaver and a 9-inch knife in her Manhattan office Tuesday evening. A psychiatrist who worked in the building, Dr. Kent Shinbach, came to Faughey's aid and was badly injured.

Tenn. DA's body won't be exhumed in case
A judge refused to allow investigators to dig up the body of a former Knox County district attorney general to look for evidence against his widow, who is charged with murdering her second husband. The investigation into the second husband's 2003 death led authorities to question whether Ed Dossett might also have been slain. A medical examiner at the time of Dossett's death in 1992 ruled the district attorney was knocked down and trampled to death by cattle in his pasture. But questions have emerged about whether he was drugged. The widow, Raynella Dossett-Leath, is accused of fatally shooting her second husband, but she claims the retired barber committed suicide. She has never been accused of or charged with any wrongdoing related to Dossett's death.
