Heathrow plane removed from runway - Calls flood in to Madeleine hotline - 'Unsafe streets' remark ignites row - School knife detector plans backed - Browne to make data loss statement

Heathrow plane removed from runway
Engineers have lifted the British Airways plane that crash-landed at Heathrow and moved it off the runway.
Flight BA038 suffered a double engine failure and skidded along the grass short of the runway on Thursday afternoon.
All 136 passengers and 16 crew escaped but an investigation has begun to determine the cause of the failure.

Calls flood in to Madeleine hotline
Investigators hunting for missing toddler Madeleine McCann have received dozens of calls from the public after releasing images of the man who may have abducted her. A police artist drew two sketches of the man based on a statement given by a British holidaymaker who stayed in the same resort as the McCann family last year.

'Unsafe streets' remark ignites row
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith's comments that she would not feel safe walking the streets of London late at night were an "astonishing admission", the Tories said. Shadow home secretary David Davis said it was "shameful" that people could walk around some of the world's capital cities at night but not London. And Liberal Democrat candidate for London Mayor Brian Paddick said the Home Secretary was "not alone in feeling unsafe" in the capital.

School knife detector plans backed
Plans to install airport-style metal detectors at some of the country's toughest secondary schools in a bid to curb knife crime among pupils have been welcomed by teaching unions.
The measure is expected to form the centrepiece of the Government's new action plan for tacking violence which will be unveiled next month by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith.

Browne to make data loss statement
Defence Secretary Des Browne is expected to make a statement to the House of Commons after the theft of a stolen military laptop computer containing the personal details of 600,000 people.
News emerged on Friday of the theft more than a week ago.
Mr Browne will come under pressure to explain why such a large amount of data was held on a single laptop, particularly in the light of other losses by Government departments in recent months.
