Shannon: Man Charged With Kidnap
A 39-year-old man has been charged with the kidnap and false imprisonment of Shannon Matthews. Her stepfather's uncle, Michael Donovan, is due in court in the morning. Donovan, of Lidgate Gardens, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, will appear before the town's magistrates charged with snatching the nine-year-old off the street on February 19. The youngster was discovered less than a mile from her home on Friday afternoon, 24 days after she went missing.
Butler 'Took Diana Engagement Ring'
Paul Burrell took an engagement ring from the dead body of Diana, Princess of Wales and kept it, his former bodyguard has claimed at the inquest into her death. Michael Faux said that the former royal butler also kept documents, including papers note-headed with the Buckingham Palace crest, and burnt them. He told the jury in central London that after he agreed to sign a confidentiality agreement, Mr Burrell told him he had an engagement ring and led him to believe it was Diana's.
Toys recalled over magnets fears
A toy manufacturer has recalled about 280,000 products sold in the UK amid fears that children could swallow small magnets attached to them. Canadian firm Mega Brands said around 2.4 million of the Chinese-made action figures had been withdrawn from sale worldwide. A company spokesman said production of the MagnaMan and Magtastik toys had been halted following safety concerns.
Minister's bid to silence coroners
The Government has launched a legal battle to stop coroners blaming the Ministry of Defence for the deaths of soldiers. Defence Secretary Des Browne asked the High Court to ban coroners using language that is strongly critical of the ministry in their verdicts. The application came in a test case relating to Territorial Army soldier Private Jason Smith, 32, who died of heatstroke in southern Iraq.
Gordon And Mandy: Deep Freeze
The Prime Minister's official spokesman has informed political journalists that Gordon Brown and Peter Mandelson did not exchange a single word during last week's two-day EU summit in Brussels. And he would have us believe that there's nothing unusual about that and it's quite normal. "They did not have an opportunity to meet in the margins," the spokesman said. "They did not meet on this occasion." Nothing unusual? Normal? Yeah, right.
A summit of the EU's leaders and the Prime Minister doesn't say so much as a "Good morning. How are you? Nice to see you again" to the UK's only commissioner, supposedly the Government's eyes and ears in Brussels?
