Government admits losing new data - Lost pension rescue scheme boosted - PM reports back on Europe Treaty - Economy feels pain of credit squeeze - Pentagon plans $147 million truck sale to Britain.

Government admits losing new data
The government suffered new embarrassment over missing data on Monday when it revealed one of its contractors had lost the details of 3 million learner drivers.
The revelation came weeks after the government admitted it had lost computer discs containing the names and bank account details of 25 million people, exposing nearly half the population to possible fraud and identity theft.

Lost pension rescue scheme boosted
The government announced more help on Monday for 141,000 people who lost their pensions when their company schemes were wound up.
Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain said a state-backed fund will be boosted by 935 million pounds to guarantee 90 percent of the value of the pensions.
Hain said the improvements represent "a generous and appropriate final settlement" for workers who had lost their pensions through no fault of their own.

PM reports back on Europe Treaty
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced a new Europe Reform Treaty is being published for detailed consideration in Parliament.
He said the Bill would ensure that any future EU amending treaty would require an Act of Parliament to ratify it.
"We will ensure sufficient time for debate on the floor of the House so that the Bill is examined in the fullest of detail and all points of view can be heard," he said.

Economy feels pain of credit squeeze
Gloom over the economy spread on Monday as the Confederation of British Industry slashed its growth forecasts and more evidence emerged of falling house prices.
The CBI said the economy was unlikely to grow by more than 2 percent in 2008, a sharp deceleration from around 3 percent this year. The business lobby had been forecasting growth of 2.2 percent in September.

Pentagon plans $147 million truck sale to Britain
The Pentagon told Congress on Monday of a potential $147 million (72.7 million pounds) sale to Britain of 170 trucks designed to withstand roadside bombs used against allied forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The main contractor for the mine-resistant, ambush- protected (MRAP) vehicles would be Force Protection Industries Inc of Ladson, North Carolina, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a notice to lawmakers.
