Queen opens Heathrow's new terminal
Queen has officially opened the £4.3 billion new Terminal 5 (T5) at Heathrow airport, ending 15 years of planning and protest. Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen paved the way for the operational start of the new terminal on March 27. MPs angry as spending list exposed
MPs were furious and bewildered after the shopping list of furnishings they can buy on expenses for their second home was revealed to the public. The disclosure of the "John Lewis list" re-ignited the row over their controversial allowances as it emerged they could claim up to £10,000 for a new kitchen and £750 for televisions and stereos.

Shannon is given police protection
Schoolgirl Shannon Matthews is safe after a dramatic police rescue ended her 24-day abduction ordeal. Police smashed their way into a flat about a mile from the nine-year-old's home in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and found her hidden in the base of a bed. Neighbours said they saw the youngster being carried out of the house and a man being dragged away by officers.

Brown welcomes progress on VAT cuts
Gordon Brown has welcomed an agreement by the European Union to consider British proposals to halve VAT on environmentally friendly products. Speaking at the end of a two-day summit in Brussels, the Prime Minister said that the leaders had made "substantial progress" on the issue. "I think people have been persuaded by the argument that we should look at this very carefully," he said.

Goa case mother served with summons
The mother of a teenage girl raped and murdered in Goa broke down in tears after being served with a summons under the Goa Children's Act by police. Since the half-naked body of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling was found on the beach in the resort of Anjuna on February 19, 43-year-old Fiona MacKeown has questioned the police handling of the inquiry. Her lawyer, Vikram Varma, said that Mrs MacKeown, from north Devon, was served with a summons by two male police officers who went to her house.
