Bank rejects Northern Rock nationalisation report
The Bank of England rejected a report on Monday that it would prefer to see ailing bank Northern Rock nationalised.
Channel 4 television news cited "senior sources" as saying Britain's central bank now believed nationalisation was the best option for Northern Rock.
"It is not a preference," said a Bank of England spokesman in response to the Channel 4 report. "Of course, it is a workstream that is progressing."

Brown makes visit to Afghanistan
Gordon Brown made his first visit to Afghanistan since becoming prime minister on Monday and told troops the battle against the Taliban was vital to defeat terrorism.
Britain has some 7,700 troops in Afghanistan, the largest foreign force after the United States, and has borne the brunt of some of the fiercest fighting in the country as its soldiers combat Taliban insurgents in the southern province of Helmand.

Police in schools under new plan
Police officers could be permanently based in schools as part of a plan to tackle teenage yobs, the Government said.
Ministers announced proposals to house a far wider range of services on school sites, including social workers, child psychologists and speech therapists.
The move could also see police officers stationed in schools to provide positive role models for pupils and prevent anti-social behaviour.

Wind farms 'to power every UK home'
Every household in Britain could be powered by off-shore wind farms by 2020 under plans being announced by the Government.
With the equivalent of two turbines to every mile, up to 7,000 turbines could be installed around the UK's coastline in a bid to boost the wind energy produced 60-fold.

Wife of 'back-from-dead' Briton charged with deception
Police charged Monday the wife of a man who reappeared after being presumed dead for more than five years with two counts of deception on her return from Panama.
Anne Darwin, a 55-year-old former doctor's surgery receptionist, will appear in Hartlepool Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where her husband John, 57, attended a brief hearing earlier on Monday.
