Al Fayed abandons Diana legal fight
Mohamed al Fayed has abandoned his 10-and-a-half-year legal quest to prove that Diana, Princess of Wales and his son Dodi Fayed were murdered by the security services. The Harrods owner said he was doing so for the sake of her sons, Princes William and Harry. In an interview with ITV News, Mr al Fayed said he accepted the verdict of the inquest "with reservations" and said: "Enough is enough."

A Koran dated to the middle of the seventh century was sold for nearly 2.5 million pounds (3.1 million euros, 4.9 million dollars) on Tuesday, a world record price for an Islamic manuscript at auction. The palimpsest (parchment page), which likely originated from the Saudi city of Medina, had been estimated to sell for between 100,000 and 150,000 pounds, London auction house Christie's said.

The Government has suffered a blow after new, tougher immigration rules for skilled workers who want to remain in the UK were declared unfair and unlawful by the High Court. The decision torpedoes controversial changes made retrospectively to test criteria for the Government's Highly Skilled Migrants Programme (HSMP).

Gordon Brown is regarded as a worse prime minister than Tony Blair by nearly a third of voters, a new poll suggests.
The Populus survey for The Times also shows the Conservatives' lead over Labour growing by three percentage points in the last month. It found support for the Tories has risen two points to 39%, while that for Labour has fallen one to 33%. The Liberal Democrats are down two on 17%. Populus also found that 31% of the public feels the Prime Minister is worse than his predecessor, Mr Blair. The findings are more bad news for Gordon Brown after recent polls showed that voters overwhelmingly rejected last month's Budget.
