Northern Rock chief executive quits
The chief executive of crisis-hit mortgage lender Northern Rock has resigned.
Adam Applegarth will leave by the end of January when a way forward for the beleaguered group has been resolved.
The bank also announced that four non-executive directors - Sir Derek Wanless, Nichola Pease, Adam Fenwick and Rosemary Radcliffe - were stepping down with immediate effect.

Thousands of English children are drinking and taking drugs, according to a major study by schools watchdog Ofsted.
At least one in seven secondary school pupils has tried illegal drugs while a fifth of ten to 15-year-olds regularly get drunk, according to the report. Researchers questioned more than 100,000 pupils across England and found the biggest worry for most children was their exams.

The prime minister's ambassador for England's 2018 World Cup bid has said there should be "cost controls" on footballers' wages. Richard Caborn's intervention comes after his successor as sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe caused controversy by saying Premiership remuneration was "obscene".
Gordon Brown was thought to have been angry about Sutcliffe's comments - and now his World Cup ambassador has added to calls for a rethink.
House price growth to hit zero in 2008
Annual house price inflation in will fall to zero next year as affordability constraints are compounded by tighter lending conditions, the Nationwide building society forecast on Friday. If realised, this would be the weakest year for the property market in more than a decade.
"Economic tailwinds are turning into headwinds and house price inflation is expected to drop from the current rate of 9.7 percent to zero percent by this time next year," Nationwide said.

French police have detained the 28-year-old niece of Labour MP Quentin Davies on suspicion of murder after she drunkenly stabbed a man she met in a bar, police said Thursday. Jessica Davies contacted police in the early hours of Sunday morning to say that she had stabbed her 24-year-old companion at her home in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, west of Paris, said a judicial source.
