US, Swiss ask for delay in UBS secrecy case
The U.S. and Swiss governments and banking giant UBS AG indicated Sunday they were seeking a settlement and asked a federal judge to delay high-stakes hearings on the Internal Revenue Service's effort to identify thousands of suspected American tax evaders.

China raises injured toll from riots to 1,680
China on Sunday raised the injured toll from ethnic clashes a week ago to 1,680 — one more bit in the trickle of information the government has released on the unrest in the far west, though much remains unknown. The official Xinhua News Agency said the number of people wounded during the ethnic violence that broke out July 5 in the regional capital of Urumqi has increased by nearly 600, according to Xinjiang Governor Nur Bekri during a televised speech. He said that more than 900 of the injured remained hospitalized, and 74 "are on the verge of death."

5 Iranian officials released by US return to Iran
American officials said a U.S.-Iraqi security agreement required that they hand the men over, but said they fear the Iranians — held on suspicion of aiding Shiite militants — pose a threat to U.S. troops in Iraq. Jackson: 'Murdered for his money'
In interviews with Sunday newspapers, La Toya gave details about the 50-year-old singer's sudden death, drugs found in his body and a stash of cash and jewels that she claims have gone missing. She told one paper: "We don't think just one person was involved in the murder. It was a conspiracy to get Michael's money." La Toya, 53, accused a "shadowy" group of hangers-on of cutting him off from his family and friends and forcing him to sign up for 50 concerts at London's O2 arena.

Edinburgh: Firefighter killed tackling blaze
Ewan Williamson, 35, was killed and one of his colleagues was injured after a floor inside the building collapsed.
Approximately 70 firefighters were sent to the Balmoral bar in Dalry Road, Edinburgh, after the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning.
Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service later released a statement from Mr Williamson's family saying: "This has come as a horrific shock to the family. Ewan was a wonderful, kind, sporty and outgoing person who was loved by everyone.
