British Diana judge thanks France for its help

Judge in charge of the inquest into Princess Diana's death has written to thank France's justice minister for her country's "excellent cooperation" in the investigation.

In a letter to Justice Minister Rachida Dati released by her ministry Friday, Coroner Lord Justice Scott Baker thanks France for helping to organise a trip by jurors to view the scene of Diana's fatal Paris car crash in 1997.

Refinery shut down ahead of strike

The giant Grangemouth oil refinery has been closed down ahead of a strike by 1,200 workers in a bitter row over pensions which threatens fuel supplies.

The 1,700 acre site in Scotland, the main fuel supplier north of the border, was shut down by owners Ineos as it prepared for the 48-hour walkout by staff from Sunday morning.

Britain upgrades terror assessment for travellers

 Govt changed its travel advice for China on Friday, as Interpol warned of a possible Al-Qaeda-style attack or violent disruption from pro-Tibet supporters at August's Beijing Olympics.

"There is an underlying threat from terrorism in China," the Foreign Office said on its travel advice web site. Previously London had said the risk was "low". The department, though, said it was not discouraging travel.

Winehouse arrested in assault probe

Troubled singer Amy Winehouse was arrested after going to a central London police station.
Police said she had been held on suspicion of assault.
Winehouse went to Holborn Police Station voluntarily to be questioned over an alleged assault.

Reports said she was accused of attacking two men in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "A 24-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault after attending a central London police station by appointment. She is currently in custody."

Iran reportedly says no confrontation with U.S. in Gulf

Iran on Friday denied there had been any confrontation between its forces and a U.S. ship in the Gulf, Iranian media reported, after a U.S. official said a ship contracted by the U.S Military Sealift Command fired on an Iranian vessel.

Some media suggested that, if there had been an incident, it may have involved a private boat that could have been Iranian.
