Families at the centre of our attention – PM
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi stressed yesterday that the Nationalist government places families at the centre of its attention, striving to work on projects aimed at giving them a high quality of life. Speaking during a political activity in Sliema, Dr Gonzi spoke about the government’s commitment to open a brand new school every year, the high quality services provided at Mater Dei Hospital, the investment in the pharmacy of your choice service, the opening of new civic centres in localities like Għajnsielem and Siġġiewi, as well as the investment in open spaces such as Ġnien George Bonello du Puis, Bizazza Street and St Anne Square in Sliema. He also referred to the recent decision to avoid increasing the utility tariffs, saying: “This was another important decision that again shows that our families’ interests come first. We are not clinging to power, but to our families.” Last Thursday, as Finance Minister Tonio Fenech also explained during yesterday’s activity, the government said it was looking into the possibility of covering part of Enemalta Corporation’s costs, such as those related to the eco-reduction and feed-in tariffs.(independent.com.mt) The trade policy is to tell a lot about nothing, here is a perfect example.

Mater Dei Hospital task force formed
The government and various trade unions have agreed to form a task force to discuss measures to improve hospital services in the context of unusually high demand. A meeting was held today between Health Minister Joseph Cassar, Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea and representatives of the MAM, the GWU and the UHM. The MUMN did not attend. During the meeting, hospital officials presented data showing a 'drastic' increase in demand for hospital services in the past two months compared to the same months last year.Measures taken so far and other proposals were discussed. The discussion will continue within the task force. The MUMN will be invited for the talks.(timesofmalta.com) This increased demand is certainly due to the cold snap, however, this is an excellent initiative to not ignore the consequences of this wave and do nothing.

Funds available at last for Fort St Angelo restoration
The European Regional Development Fund has agreed to allocate €13.4 million for the restoration of Fort St Angelo, Environment and Culture Minister Mario de Marco confirmed this afternoon. The grant will enable a project for much needed full restoration of the fort to finally get under way. Emergency works on the work are currently being carried out through a €1.5 million government grant. The works started in June when a swimming pool, that dated back to the 1980s, was removed together with a water tank that was overlooking it. Some work has also been done to the roof of the fort's entrance, which had received a direct hit in WW11. It will eventually be restored to its original vaulted structure which dates back to time of knights.  During the war, a bomb had opened up a crater, which the British repaired with steel beams and concrete. This intervention rusted with time damaging the stone in the process. A complex operation has been carried out to remove the beams.(timesofmalta.com) Heritage Malta is rich. It's a good thing it is properly maintained.
