Snow, ice storm rips across northern US
Des Moines International Airport was closed for several hours after an airliner slid off a taxiway. None of the 44 passengers was injured. A regional jet slid off pavement when it turned onto a taxiway after landing at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wis., but no injuries were reported among the 25 passengers.

Earth's tropics belt expands
The newest study, published Sunday in the new scientific journal Nature Geoscience, shows that by using the weather definition, the tropics are expanding toward Earth's poles more than predicted. And that means more dry weather is moving to the edges of the tropics in places like the U.S. Southwest.

Obama endorsed by Des Moines, Iowa mayor
Democrat Barack Obama was endorsed Sunday by the mayor of Iowa's largest city and predicted more criticism ahead from presidential rivals as his political fortunes keep brightening.
Meeting with reporters, Obama trotted out Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie, who last month won a second term. He has focused on global warming and other environmental issues. "Senator Obama has made a promise and is willing an open-minded enough to listen to the mayor of the capital city of Iowa," Cownie said.

McCain Endorsed by New Hampshire's Largest Newspaper
Republican presidential candidate John McCain won the endorsement of New Hampshire's largest newspaper, the New Hampshire Union Leader, in an editorial that said the Arizona senator is ``the man to lead America.''
The editorial in the Union Leader said that, while ``we don't agree with him on every issue,'' McCain ``is the most trustworthy, competent, and conservative of all those seeking the nomination.''

Liz Taylor performs despite strike
Elizabeth Taylor returned to the stage Saturday night, after persuading striking TV and film writers to briefly put down their picket signs.
The Writers Guild of America agreed not to picket the Paramount Pictures lot when actress and AIDS activist Taylor gave a benefit performance of A.R. Gurney's play "Love Letters" with James Earl Jones.
